Advertising on a Kindle?

I just read this article in Marketing Week and can see both sides.

Basically, Amazon are developing an advertising platform for the Kindle. My initial reaction was shock horror.

I got a Kindle for Christmas and can imagine how annoying it would be if I’m in the middle of a nail biting part of my book when all of a sudden I’m distracted by an advert.

However, I can also see the positives of a relevant ad at the beginning/end of a book, or an advert for other books I might like when I’ve finished reading.

Invisalign consumer website launches

In 2011 we worked with Invisalign to launch their new brand and latest product innovations across Europe. A key deliverable was the Invisalign consumer website, which required an update, bringing it in line with the new brand guidelines. It also proved the perfect opportunity to optimize the site, encouraging engagement from site visitors.

The original website was template driven, and budgetary constraints meant we were restricted to producing a new site to fit within these templates.

The existing site had no real focus on conversion, and as such we sought to design a site to capture as many prospective patients as possible.  The site addresses this with increased prominence of major consumer touchpoints on the homepage, as well as encouraging datacapture on all pages throughout the site.

DCH delivered the redesign, optimization and build of 11 local language websites within three months, a pretty tall order alongside the rest of the rebrand project!

The full case study will be available soon, but in the meantime, take a look at the site.

Brands need to take the risk while embracing technology

Article in Technology Digital by our Planning Director, Nicholas Gill, on why brands need to blend with other channels of interaction to create a bigger impact among their audiences.

Attack of the beige

I’m seeing a lot of boring and bland “engagement” from brands in social media. There’s far too much of “it’s Halloween, have a treat tonight with or “it’s the weekend, celebrate the end of another shit week with or  so why not celebrate/make the most of/not worry about it* with as if our life revolves around . It doesn’t. It’s lazy and boring especially if it’s a stock “filler” in your social content plan.

The analogy of walks into a pub, shouts and walks out again without bothering to “engage” with your response holds firm. I don’t want a conversation with you about the weather – I can see what it’s like outside my window – unless you give me a reason to take advantage of it; e.g. give me a £1 off your tasty, winter beverage this cold day and then I may be interested. Otherwise, it’s just noise. Which is what social media was never meant to be.

It’s what Billy Connolly would call the attack of the beige. Be colourful. Be creative. Be interesting.

And I know this isn’t real (or is it?) but it’s colourful. Despite the product being beige.

No such thing as a free lunch

A fascinating article on privacy, advertising and the use of your data on social networks and the new alternatives such as Diaspora and Unthink to the accepted norm. Where Hugh once said if you talked to people the way advertising does, they'd punch you in the face. He was talking about traditional ATL advertising and the shouty nature of the traditional 30' spot. This quote from the article suggests that advertising in social media could possibly be worse; rather than just blurting at you in ad breaks, it snoops on you and brazenly flashes this in your face. Good food for thought to start your day with.

Imagine you're eating out with your lady or a loved one; the restaurant is completely free from 12pm until 2pm. Free. Trouble is, your entire conversation is being recorded and watched closely. Every time you both mention something that suggests an interest in a product or purchase or place - an ad rep/TV/radio ad/leaflet appears in front of you and pitches away. Mention you're interested in a mini break; cue the man from the travel agency peddling his wares. Your meal is free though, don't forget. You can always ignore the ad man. How many of us would appreciate that constant eavesdropping? Few. Remarkable then that the digital world doesn't quite suffer the same reaction. It all feels so remote and far way.

DRIVE

I came across this trailer by randomly seeing an ad at the bottom of MSN Messenger! Totally glad I clicked as this film looks amazing. Think the transporter but with a deeper, gritty storyline… so actually good. what's more is I’m totally loving the movie poster for this, the subtle dirty dancing font mixed with the stylised photography works so damn well. The trailer below is 18 cert like the film so if violence in a lock stock kind of way isn’t your cup of tea, skip this one.

Pronunciation Manual via Youtube

Not a site as such, although I’m sure I have seen a blog with all their videos… but i digress. This channel on YouTube deserves some attention parodying the educational Pronunciation Book’s channel with there own way of pronouncing words… I have to say I’m learning loads!!

THE DRUMS – MONEY

I’m a little obsessed with the Drums at the moment, in particular this track below. I’ve had it on loop for 2 months now and I still love it, just like their past tracks it has a proper indie hipster video which is all good by me! Oh and they’re paying at the O2 Bristol in December, I’ve just grabbed a pair of tickets, who's coming!!

DIABLO III (PC)

The Diablo series is a much loved and highly regarded among PC gamers as a classic one, so the announcement of a new instalment was hugely welcomed. 200 years and delays later and some beta footage as been released upon the internet for us to love due to how it still looks like very true to Diablo 1 and 2, but then we all cry at the forever changing release date again. sob.

APOLLO 18

This week I bring you some sci-fi horror for your eyes. Recently while I was helping out Tony Stark modify his suit for additional bad-ass I came across this trailer for Apollo 18. Created as found footage of the secret mission to the moon Apollo 18 has the whole Blair witch style feel to it mixing horror, quick cut aways and low gravity! The first teaser had me hooked with the whole “what happened there?” question it posses, and below is the official full trailer for your pleasure.

UNHEAR IT

I know a song that will get on your nerves... get on your... Ok I'll stop but if you’ve ever had a song on loop in your think-tank try this site out for size. It randomly picks a track of equal catchiness to replace whatever it is you can’t stop humming… However the only bad thing is I tend to then have their new track stuck... Creating this evil loop of permanent dependence upon this site…

LITTLE VICTORIES – A FIREWORK – A FLARE

Little Victories are one of my favourite bands that I’ve discovered since moving to Bristol. I was given the tip from a friend who’s the drummer in the awesome Camera Culture, and having seen their first gig I was hooked. I recently went to the best of Bristol gig at the Fleece and have to share a track with whoever reads this! Oh and be sure to check the video out too, it’s just a little bit awesome.

CS:GO (PC, PS3, 360)

Counter Strike (CS) started its life as a mod created for the original Half-Life game on the PC around 12 years ago and has sold over 25,000,000 units. Its popularity was huge and over many years it helped shape the professional gaming leagues into the major events that they are today. 12 years on and the third revision is on the horizon. This isn’t CS 2 but more an update to CS, refined and tweaked. The video below has exploded and got everyone who use to play it religiously like myself excited once again.

STOCKING IS THE NEW PLANKING

Now and again I come across stock images that I really wonder if anyone has ever used or found a use for them… now every stock image no matter how bizarre or just plain cheesy has a purpose in life… TO BE REPRODUCED (and laughed at) Check out the link bellow to see what I’m rambling on about!

MADEON – POP CULTURE

Madeon is an amazing mix artist with some mad skills that i discovered yesterday. Also uses some rad technology; in the track below is mashed using 39 tracks using the Novation Launchpad flawlessly. But this week I'm posting the video… mainly because it features a guy I truly think is awesome: Nathan Barnatt. He does a lot of comedy videos, one worth checking out is a series called Talking Classics which I had to pick up on DVD! but recently he has done a string of music vids which are proving to be very popular. See for yourself, you may learn some new moves too!!

DEUS EX –  HUMAN REVOLTION (PC, PS3, 360)

This one is a personal gem of mine; It’s been around 10 years since the first one came out this game sets to raise the bar all over again. I have heard mix reviews from fans of the original which contradict all the 9/10’s it has been receiving but haters always gonna hate. Judging by the material I’ve seen this game looks deep, immersive and crazy to play so I'm itching to get some time to sink into this. Below is the launch trailer which features all in game footage and clearly pays homage to Blade Runner with a few I Am Robot elements thrown in there too, from an art direction point of view it’s visually rich and amazing.
